Transforming Patients Dental Experiences with Sedation and Sleep Dentistry – Dr. Joseph Khalil
If you suffer from dental phobias, Dr. Joseph Khalil can help. We are pleased to provide advanced dental sedation, sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry, for patients in Arlington and surrounding areas. By administering dental sedatives prior to or at the beginning of a patient’s procedure, we can help reduce the patient’s anxiety surrounding receiving dental treatment. With sedation dentistry, you can sit back and relax in the dentist’s chair and obtain the treatment you need for a healthy, beautiful smile.
Sedation Dentistry Options
Dr. Joseph Khalil provides a range of sedation dentistry options to best meet our patients’ needs. We offer relatively mild sedatives (administered orally and via inhalation) as well as more potent sedative options (administered by injection or inhalation) known as sleep dentistry. Our sedation dentistry options include:
Oral conscious sedation dentistry – delivers sedation in pill form, which the patient takes approximately one hour before the dental appointment. By the time the patient arrives at our office, he is mildly sedated and relaxed for the procedure.
Inhalation sedation dentistry – delivers sedation via inhaled nitrous oxide gas, or “laughing gas”. The gas takes effect within a few minutes of administration and provides a mildly sedate state.

Sleep Dentistry
The following sedatives provide a moderate to pronounced effect in which patients typically have little to no memory of the procedure, comparable to sleeping through the appointment. As such, these sedatives are sometimes referred to as sleep dentistry options:
Intramuscular sedation dentistry – delivers sedation via injection into the muscle tissue, achieving a moderate to strong sedative effect. The patient remains conscious and able to respond to stimuli.
Intravenous (IV) sedation dentistry – delivers sedation via injection into the bloodstream, achieving a strong sedative effect. The patient typically has little or no memory of the procedure.
General anesthesia – delivers sedation, typically via intravenous injection or inhaled gas, achieving a deeply sedated state. The patient becomes unconscious and has little or no memory of the procedure.
