What is Inhalation Conscious Sedation?
Inhalation conscious sedation refers to the use of a dental sedative (nitrous oxide) administered in gas form. (The patient inhales the gas through a gas mask at the beginning of her dental appointment. Within minutes, the nitrous induces a relaxed, anxiety-free state. The dentist administers the gas throughout the procedure, maintaining the sedative effect.) After the nitrous takes effect, the dentist administers a dental anesthetic, completely numbing the patient prior to her dental procedure. Most patients do not notice that the anesthetic is being administered. The sedative effect usually wears off within several hours, at which point the patient can resume her day-to-day activities.
